Biologically Friendly Care

The challenge all health practitioners face is giving the patient solutions that are effective and at the same time ‘completely natural’ in their reaction to the body and its tissues and organs. Like in all disciplines, there are disagreements as to what that exact strategy should be.

Dr. Hwang doesn’t subscribe to the do-everything-different approach. Rather, he tries to incorporate new therapies when they appropriately address a patient’s need or request and improve the patient’s outlook or physical condition. Some might considered this holistic, maybe even alternative. We like to call it, “Care with a Biologically Friendly Focus.” It means doing everything we can to make our patient’s treatment comfortable, safe and effective without placing unnecessary pressure on their biological system.

You have many choices. Please explore them. If you are interested in the way we approach dentistry, we can meet with you and determine together whether our care is right for you.

Some of our Biologically Friendly Care Strategies:

• We often check specific materials to make sure our patients don’t have any individual reactions. These are materials that most people find compatible. However, we realize that not everyone has the same bio-compatibility.

• Our practice doesn’t use metal fillings – there are differing technical views on this topic. We don’t believe it is necessary to debate the technicalities of the issue. Because our patients want other options and see the additional benefits of materials like composite resin restorations, we prefer to use them.

• If you prefer to have your metal fillings removed and want more natural-looking materials to replace them, we do offer a clean and safety-focused environment to perform this treatment. We use a special exhaust system to eliminate mercury vapors during the treatment. We don’t recommend removing recent metal fillings that fit properly and are healthy underneath. However, if you want your smile to be cosmetically enhanced, we are able to remove mercury fillings safely and in a very effective manner.

• Endodontic (root canal) therapy can help save your natural tooth. We use a biocompatible substance called Biocalex (calcium oxide) to seal the teeth from infection. Biocalex also has been clinically shown to have a high success rate in saving teeth that used to be considered not savable.

Pain Freedom

Finding the right balance is important in many areas of life and health. It is no different when it comes to oral and dental health. Your jaw and its muscles, your teeth and facial muscles all can influence how you approach life from a comfort standpoint. If these areas of the body are not working properly, severe pain can occur. A debilitating condition can develop and persist for years unless a proper balance is achieved.

Dr. Hwang is skilled in finding that balance. The problems we see can be described in many ways including TMJ or TMD, which basically means a jaw joint imbalance. It’s technically called Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction. Other imbalances in around your jaw muscles can cause facial muscle pain (Myofacial Dysfunction), tooth pain, and even neck, head and back pain. Of course, locating the reason for this pain is the most important element of Dr. Hwang’s therapy.

Because you have pain in your teeth doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong with a tooth so pulling teeth or a root canal might not be the answer. Conversely, jaw, neck, head, back or facial pain might actually occur because of how your teeth come together. Worn or crooked teeth, an over or under bite and uneven teeth can cause all types of pain that can occur from your temple to the middle of your back. Disease and decay often aren’t the guilty parties. Dr. Hwang can bring harmony to your oral health and remove a lifetime of pain. Of course, every patient with head, neck or back pain might not get the results they desire from these methods, but Dr. Hwang has given many patients freedom from pain.

To determine the cause of your pain and to develop solutions for relieving it, we do a complete dental health history and other important diagnostic tests to find a ‘proper balance.’
